Masrour Barzani elected prime minister of Kurdistan Region

Lawmakers have elected Masrour Barzani as prime minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). He is now tasked with forming the cabinet.  The Kurdistan Region Parliament convened on Tuesday to vote for the new prime minister. The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) nominee, who is the son of former-president Masoud Barzani, secured 87 votes among the 97 MPs who attended the session ,From now who has 30 days to form a government.

The President, Masoud Barzani, the former president of the Kurdistan Region and head of its largest party the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), said he was "pleased" to see the installation of Masrour Barzani as premier:

“ Pleased to see that the Kurdistan Parliament elected today as the new Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government.I wish him continued success and plan to fully support him in pursuit of a more developed and more prosperous Kurdistan Region” he tweeted about his son. 

Who is Masrour Barzani?

Masrour Barzani was born March 2, 1969 in the village of Dilman in the Balakayati area of Erbil province. He is married with three daughters and one son. He joined the Peshmerga in 1985 and studied political sciences at the American University in Washington D.C. He later obtained master's degree in conflict resolution. Masrour was elected to the KDP Politburo in the party’s 12th congress in 1999, and founded the Barzani Charity Foundation (BCF) in 2005. In July 2012 he was elected chancellor of the KRSC, in charge of the Asayish and other security services.  He is honorary chancellor of the American University of Duhok.
